A couple of weekends ago we spent a very pleasant afternoon walking around the Chicago Botanical gardens. It’s a short drive out of the city, and worth every minute of the traffic on the evil roads leading into and out of Chicago.

This was one of my favorite images from the afternoon.

It’s really a collection of gardens, which all lead into one another in a relaxed and rambling manner. The dwarf conifers lead into a rock garden, which is the gateway to waterfall gardens, from where you turn the corner and find a bridge leading into a Japanese-themed garden island.

Even though it was busy, it was a beautiful afternoon, and everything from the blue heron to the strangest lilac colored hydrangea looked at its best in the sun. There are plenty of spots to sit and soak it all in, and some even managed to convey tranquility.

The gardens have been on my list of places to go for some time now. It’s good to know that we’re steadily crossing some of those trips off the to-do list.

It’s even better that my husband was the one who made the suggestion that we go. I think he was trying to atone for all the cars.
